What do students need to bring?

Students will need to bring a packed lunch, along with pens and paper. The Coláiste will provide specialised handbooks to each student. Students will need to wear casual comfortable clothes for the sport and activities in the afternoon.

What about students with little or no fluency?

To those students who have little or no fluency in the language we aim to foster their confidence and build up their fluency through our structured morning classes and through the social use of Irish in the afternoon/evening activities. Ceannairí and teachers are always on hand to help any student who has any difficulty with the language. The Coláiste aims to create an effective and enjoyable learning environment for students at all level of fluency.

What can parents do at home?

Parents and other members of the family can use your own knowledge and understanding of the language, regardless of how small it may be, in conversation with your son or daughter throughout the duration of the course.

We have provided a Conversational Guide for parents & other members of the family to use at home and to also practice your own “Cúpla Focal”.

‘Riail na Gaeilge’ & Speaking Irish

The Gaeltacht Course can only be effective if students refrain from conversing in English for the duration of the course. Coláiste Naomh Eoin insists that students respect and abide by this fundamental rule. While students can incorporate English words and phrases into sentences in Gaeilge, they will at all times be encouraged to avail of their presence in the Gaeltacht and to actively seek to fill the gaps in their vocabulary.  If you speak English, you won’t learn Irish. This rule is enforced in an enlightened, constructive and fair way with emphasis on reward and effort. Students who do not co-operate in this regard will be sent home without refund of fee. Special help will be given to students with little of no fluency in the language.

What about settling in?

The first few days of the course are very important and it is essential that our students develop a positive learning attitude as early as possible. After the first few days students should become adjusted and acclimatized to an all-Irish speaking environment. Students should enjoy the course, participate fully in class and in the afternoon activities and most importantly speak Irish at all times, before you know it you will find yourself thinking as Gaeilge! If for any reason your son/daughter encounters any difficulty in settling in or is unhappy about anything please contact us immediately. We are always here to help students to enjoy every aspect of the course as much as possible.
